Over the years, manufacturers in a variety of industrie […]

Over the years, manufacturers in a variety of industries, from food and beverage, healthcare, and dentistry, have realized the importance of water quality in keeping product and service quality up to standard. However, microbes and bacteria recontamination are some of the biggest challenges that they face in keeping customers safe from contaminated water, even after installing pure water systems.

On top of this, COVID-19 has brought new challenges and a sense of urgency to ensure the places we eat, the hospitals we visit, and other businesses that rely on the use of water are properly disinfected.

Ozonated water has proven to be one of the most effective, safest, and cost-effective solutions for disinfection and sanitation. Ozone (O3) occurs naturally in the atmosphere and helps to absorb harmful UV rays from the sun. We’ve all heard of the ozone layer that helps to protect plants and animals and is essential for our survival. However, ozone can be generated for applications in a wide range of industries, including the oxidation and detoxification of wastewater, the cleaning of electronic components, and sanitation of kitchens and food treatment.

Luckily, electrolysis equipment used in electrolytic ozone generation is simple and easy to use, and as such is being adopted as an invaluable sanitizing tool in these industries.

What is electrolytic ozone?

Electrolytic ozone is created by passing an electrical current through water to break the oxygen (O2) molecules into oxygen atoms (O). The free oxygen atoms can then combine with oxygen molecules to form O3. The O3 made in this way is useful for a number of different applications and is a powerful sanitizing agent for cleaning water, water systems, and other machinery.

This method is very simple, efficient, and effective. Electrolytic ozone is especially useful for sanitizing water systems to create clean, microbe-free water. Because the ozone can be created inside the water system, contamination is kept to a minimum and can be well managed and controlled.

How electrolytic ozone is made

Electrolytic ozone can be made with electrolytic ozone generators (EOGs). These systems use two core technologies to generate ozone from water. The first technology is called direct (or inline) electrolysis. It can generate ozone from tap water and is generally used in commercial applications such as sanitizing beverage-making equipment in coffee shops, bars, and restaurants.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology is another electrolytic ozone technology used in industrial applications. In this process, water is introduced to the anode side of the electrolysis cell, electrolytically decomposed, converted to ozone, and mixed with the ozone water formed in the compact cell.

Ozonated water generated through an EOG can sanitize and disinfect beverage dispensers, kitchen surfaces, dental equipment, and other environments prone to collect bacteria over time. The installation of electrolytic ozone generators is an effective way of sanitizing water. Ozone is produced from the water being treated and as such there are no contaminants, nor is there a need for the use of chemicals or additional treatment steps.

What are the main advantages of electrolytic ozone compared to traditional ozone systems?

The most notable benefit is that electrolytic systems use water to create the ozone. When it comes to ozone water disinfection, electrolytic is the industry standard.

It’s cheaper over the long term
Hiring disinfection crews or a team of specialists to regularly disinfect a kitchen or hospital area can be expensive over time, especially when considering labor costs. Professionals in leading food and beverage companies have already adopted electrolytic ozone technologies in various critical sanitation applications over conventional chemical sanitation with the labor involved. EOG systems can automate the disinfection job while eliminating the tendency of human error.

A higher concentration of Ozone
Ozone concentration is measured in grams of ozone per standard cubic meter [g(O3)/Nm³]) or its weight percent (wt%). Traditional ozone systems produce ozone from the air with a range of 2 to 6 wt% and from oxygen with concentration from 7 wt% to over 20 wt%. Electrolytic ozone improves on this with a concentration of more than 20wt%, and BES systems can achieve up to 28 percent concentration. This purity data can mean a lot to ozone applications in water in terms of dissolution and efficiency.

Ozone is created in the water it’s disinfecting
Electrolytic ozone can be created inside the water that it is disinfecting. Therefore, no outside contamination is introduced into the system being treated, keeping the water from being recontaminated after disinfection.

Ozone dissolves in water with no by-products
There is no need to worry about excess ozone in the system and having to remove it, such as the chemical residues left over by chlorine and other chemical disinfectants

User-friendly equipment
Equipment is relatively simple and easy to use, with BES electrolytic ozone generators among the most compact and advanced in the world.

The future of ozone is electrolytic

While electrolytic ozone has been surrounded by misconceptions in the past, such as being costly, unreliable, and for use in limited applications, technological developments in electrolytic ozone have caused industry professionals to take a second look at the technology. Through BES solutions, various patented technologies have already reduced costs heavily. After more than 15 years in development, BES has designed a control system that is incredibly reliable.

BES EOGs are paving the way for a future of fewer chemicals in our food and in our environments. Electrolytic ozone is now in a mature stage of development, and an innovative solution to an age-old problem that’s bringing peace of mind to manufacturers, small business owners, and consumers alike. Whether it’s well water or ultrapure water, from California to Mongolia, as long as there are water and electricity, BES has the right EOG for the right application.

What is Ozonated Water?

Ozonated Water is a dissolution of ozone in water, sometimes known as “active oxygen”. Through electrolytic ozone generators, water that has been subject to an electric charge can result in ozone within the water supply. Compared to the atmospheric ozone most people are familiar with, aqueous ozone is much safer for humans.

Ozonated water is an incredibly powerful oxidizing agent. When ozone particles come into contact with microbes and other biological agents, the ozone reacts instantly to degrade the microorganisms at a cellular level. Compared to other common industrial disinfectants like chlorine, ozonated water is more effective and works faster.

Is ozonated water safe?

Despite being a powerful disinfectant, ozonated water produced from electrolytic ozone generators is not corrosive and will not irritate human skin. With properly functioning equipment, generating ozonated water poses no fire hazard and a very minuscule risk of off-gassing traces of gaseous ozone.

In addition to acting on harmful bacteria instantly, ozone leaves no chemical residue or odor. This makes it an especially attractive cleaning option for businesses involved in food processing or packaging. Likewise, ozonated water is gaining popularity among medical professionals, dentist offices, and nursing homes for being able to effectively sanitize tools and surfaces without using any toxic chemicals or leaving behind any chemical residue.

Is ozonated water environmentally friendly?

With ozonated water, chemical cleaning agents like chlorine are no longer needed to sanitize at your home or business. The use of ozonated water is likely to skyrocket across the world once business owners realize the environmental and financial benefits of using ozone for sanitizing. With an electrolytic ozone generator for on-site ozone generation, all a business needs is a steady supply of filtered water.

Is ozonated water expensive?

Switching to ozonated water instead of chlorine, ammonia, or others means no longer needing to spend money on cleaning chemicals on a monthly basis. More importantly, it means no need to hire cleaning crews to regularly visit your business to disinfect. Businesses can also free up storage space that they would otherwise need to store the sanitizing chemicals on site. It’s also worth noting that there has never been a death reported as a result of exposure to ozonated water. On the other hand, there are deaths attributed to common household cleaning chemicals reported every day.

How can I use it in my business?

Electrolytic ozone is safer and more reliable for commercial-scale operations. Ozone generators such as the Waterline Disinfection System (WDS) from BES can be connected to wall-mounted fill stations or set under a sink. These make access to ozonated water supply quick and easy for employees. The wall-mounted systems can be installed under a sink and connected to the water supply, and employees can initiate the electrolytic charge themselves whenever ozonated water is needed for cleaning. They can fill a bucket or spray bottle with ozonated water to carry with them.

There are also mobile ozone generator systems and ozone spray bottles, such as the Mobile Ozone Spray (MOS) from BES. The MOS is a handheld ozone spray and a newer option that lets you disinfect surfaces with a simple spray bottle that releases ozonated water.

How long does the effect of ozone last?

Ozonated water made on-site generation systems into a water supply typically have about a 15-minute half-life. This means that as a super oxidizer and sanitizing agent, the water is most effective within the first five to ten minutes after the system delivers the electric charge to produce the ozone. In most cases, all of the ozone molecules will naturally dissipate and return to regular oxygen within two hours after the charge.

Ozonated water is fast becoming an excellent option for business owners to keep their business and products sanitized. With a simple spray bottle full of active ozone infused water, you can clean workspaces effectively and instantly.

What else can I use ozonated water for?

Ozonated water has also been found effective in disinfecting garbage disposal systems and grease traps, as well as dramatically reducing odors in these typically stinky areas. A simple rinse in ozonated water can also work wonders on pipes and plumbing systems after years of build-up.

What’s the final word on ozone?

The US Department of Agriculture has determined that aqueous ozone systems are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for use in the agricultural and food processing industry. We expect that in the years ahead even more government agencies around the world will recognize the game-changing environmentally smart and sustainable potential of ozonated water generation technology. When this happens, we can expect ozone to become the mainstream disinfection method, as it has benefits for business owners, their customers, and the earth.

Water is an essential part of life, humans are made up […]

Water is an essential part of life, humans are made up of more than 70 percent water. It’s safe to say that we should make water and its cleanliness a top priority in our societies. Traditional methods, such as heat treatment and chemical sanitization to keep our water clean and consumable have done a great job until now, but ozone water, or ozonated water as it’s more commonly been called, is changing the sanitation industry.

What is ozone?

We all know that oxygen (O2) is essential to all living organisms. Trees and plants help to produce it, animals and microorganisms require it for respiration. Oxygen molecules are made up of two oxygen atoms, but what happens when a third oxygen atom gets added? We get ozone. Ozone (O3) occurs naturally in the atmosphere and forms a layer in the stratosphere that helps to block harmful UV sun rays from reaching the surface of the earth. In its natural state, Ozone is a pale blue gas with a pungent odor.

How is ozone made?

Ozone is made naturally in the atmosphere when the oxygen we breathe (O2) is split apart into single oxygen atoms by sunlight. The free oxygen atoms can rejoin to form O2 or can attach to an O2 molecule to form O3. When lightning strikes, ozone is formed, which helps to create the fresh smell that we can sometimes experience after a storm.

It is also possible to manufacture ozone. Using electric ozone generators, a high voltage can be passed through a stream of water to split some of the O2 molecules and therefore allow some of the free O atoms to attach to O2 molecules and create O3, or ozone. This form of ozone is known as electrolytic ozone. Ozone can be produced by UV lamps as well, but only in small quantities that are not always sufficient for a complete disinfection process. Due to the highly reactive nature of ozone, it is difficult to store and needs to be constantly generated for use.

What can ozone do?

Trace ozone in the atmosphere helps to maintain a balance of bacteria present in the air by neutralizing pathogenic bacteria. Ozone in the form of ozone water or ozonated water is an extremely powerful oxidizing agent and makes an excellent disinfectant that can work up to 3,000 times faster than chlorine, and can be 50 times as effective in disinfecting. Ozone can also remove odors and biofilm as well as degrading pesticides, chemical residues, and other trace contaminants. These factors, and more, make ozone one of the most effective and efficient disinfectants on the planet.

Although ozone can be toxic in extremely high concentrations, the process of creating ozonated water is easily controlled using known volumes of water and its characteristic smell can alert technicians to any issues during the process.

We’ve heard of water and we’ve heard of ozone. What happens when we put them together?

Ozone is highly soluble in water (up to 13 times more soluble than O2). When ozone is added to water, thorough disinfection and sanitation of bacteria and harmful microbes occurs. This results in clean water. Using electrolysis, it is possible to create the ozone from the very water that is being treated with no by-products. The ozone simply reverts back to oxygen after a short time (the half-life of ozone is notoriously short).

How is ozone used to disinfect water?

Although ozone has been used to clean water systems for more than 100 years, it was not until recently both consumers and industry professionals have begun to fully understand the benefits of using ozone, including approval by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2001. Electrolysis systems can be introduced to the water disinfection and purification process to create ozone, cleansing the water of bacteria and impurities whilst maintaining the pH balance. The electrolysis process splits O2 molecules to create free O atoms that can form O3 molecules. The ozone completes a disinfection cycle before returning to O2 molecules.

In addition to water purification, ozone can also be used to sanitize and disinfect equipment, machinery, and even the very air around us. In a water purification plant, ozone is the all-in-one problem solver.

What are the benefits of ozonated water?

There are a whole host of benefits of using ozonated water. Most importantly, ozone is able to perform a full disinfection process of all bacteria and viruses. Through BES electrolysis systems, ozone doesn’t require any chemicals to be effective and doesn’t produce any undesirable by-products during the ozonation process.

Ozone is also good for the environment. No chemicals are required for the ozonation process and no chemicals are produced. This helps to minimize the number of chemicals found in water supplies and allows people to trust where their water is coming from and what it contains. Because ozone is a naturally occurring molecule in our atmosphere, pollution levels are easily measured against known baselines.

Is ozonated water safe?

Ozonated water is 100 percent safe in small doses. Following the ozone disinfection process, the ozone reverts back to O2 without leaving any chemical residue, taste, or smell. Ozone is pH neutral and, therefore, doesn’t affect the pH balance of water. In addition to creating safe water that is ready to consume, ozone has also shown relatively low levels of harm to equipment compared to other chemical disinfectants. The benefits of ozonated water speak for themselves. If you’re looking for a fast, efficient, safe, and chemical-free water disinfection process then ozonated water is the best choice. It’s time to get in the ozone!

We’ve all heard of Ozone. It’s a gas that occurs natura […]

We’ve all heard of Ozone. It’s a gas that occurs naturally in trace amounts in the upper atmosphere that can protect the Earth from the Sun’s harmful radiation. But did you know that ozone is also extremely useful in our food and beverage industry?

Ozone water, also known as ozonated water or aqueous ozone is one of the strongest disinfectants known to mankind. It is effective and fast in disinfection. Compared to general chlorine disinfectants, its disinfection speed is said to be 3,000 times faster, and its sterilization ability 50 times stronger.

An Environmental-Friendly Disinfectant

Ozone water is also one of the safest disinfectants. It’s 100 percent natural. In fact, the ozone cycle is happening every day around us. Ozone in the air protects us from the harm of UV and microorganisms. The energy from lightning and ultraviolet light break down oxygen molecules to form ozone. These reaction processes can absorb harmful ultraviolet rays and convert them into heat energy, while also effectively purifying the air. After the ozone decomposes those organic matters, it will revert to oxygen. The whole process does not produce any harmful substances.

The ozone water that is produced by BES electrolytic ozone generator leaves no chemical residues, nor has a taste or smell after the reaction. It is widely used in the food and beverage industry because it does not change the taste of food when applied for food sanitation. It also has no effect on the pH balance of water. And rest assured, it causes no negative effect or irritation to our mouth, nose, or skin. T. This advanced ozone technology produces no NOx, which is known as a carcinogen, without raising a health concern and the producing process creates no known carcinogens, allowing it to be discharged directly without causing environmental pollution

Because of its safe and reliable characteristics, as early as 2001, the US FDA has approved ozone water as a safe disinfectant and added protection for food ingredients and food-contacting surfaces.

How We Benefit From Ozone

Ozone Disinfection is a “broad-spectrum” disinfection. Ozone water can directly oxidize and decompose essential biomolecular components in bacteria. Therefore, bacteria cannot survive in ozone water. Also, unlike chemical fungicides, pathogenic bacteria cannot develop a resistance to high-concentration ozone water.

Ozone Water, or Ozonated Applications

The treatment of water with ozone has a wide range of applications. It’s efficient for disinfection as well as for the degradation of pesticides in industries including food and beverage, bottling, healthcare, commercial laundry, and wastewater treatment, just to name a few. Electrolytic ozone is one of the most effective methods to produce ozone. It’s done by subjecting oxygen (O2) to a high electric voltage. Below are some of the main applications for ozonated water.

Disinfection
Ozonated water is becoming a more cost-effective, safer, and more efficient replacement for chlorine in the food and beverage, and hospitality industries. Kitchen managers are integrating ozonated water as a surface disinfectant, automating sanitation by implementing ozone systems in beverage lines, and eliminating bacteria in the commercial laundry. The benefits of chlorine include cost savings over the long term, no chemical residues, and ozone systems that automate the disinfection process, removing the possibility of human error.

Infection Control
Ozone is one of the most powerful and effective disinfectants on the market. This means ozonated water is great at disinfecting dental unit waterlines that tend to collect biofilm and bacteria due to their narrow tubing and inconsistent water flow. Through ozonated water in dental water units, patients have been kept safe from numerous diseases caused by contaminated water lines in the past, making ozone a primary ally against infection.

Food Preparation
When ozone is placed into water, it’s able to kill viruses, bacteria, and reduce pesticides that are situated in the substance. Restaurant and central kitchen staff count on ozonated water to disinfect vegetables and fruits, getting rid of any contaminants on the surface. Washing fish and meat in ozonated water will get rid of any parasites and bacteria while also increasing the shelf life for the product.

Beverage Bottling
Ozone is widely used in bottling plants of major beverage corporations. Ozonated water is simply sprayed into each bottle to disinfect the plastic or glass bottles before mineral water, soda, or other common beverages are put inside. If you’ve ever drink soda or bottled water, then we can say that ozone is not far away from us.

Other Applications
Hotels, restaurants, catering businesses, bars, and breweries have equipped ozone water disinfection systems for beverage line disinfection, hand washing, food materials disinfection, food processing station cleaning, and tool disinfection. These are just a few applications where chlorine has traditionally been used. However, chlorine’s numerous disadvantages have led to ozone being the new sustainable standard of disinfection.

How Ozone Is Created

Ozone cannot be stored because of the short half-life and must be produced on-site and on-demand. Therefore, an ozone generator is the most critical component of any successful ozone system.

There are three common methods to generate ozone: corona discharge (CD ozone), photochemical (UV ozone), and electrochemical (electrolytic ozone). The photochemical method is the most economical method, yet the ozone it produces has lower purity, with a concentration of only about 0.3% or lower, and its productivity is the lowest among all three methods.

The electrolytic method is by far the safest way to produce ozone with higher purity. In this process, water is introduced to the anode side of the electrolysis cell, electrolytically decomposed, and converted to ozone. Through this method, In addition to gaining ozone in high concentration, the amount of gas aeration is also small and the efficiency of dissolution is also high, achieving the advantages of safety and low cost of post-processing.

BioSure – Leading in Ozone Disinfection

Since 1988, BES Group has been a leading electrolytic ozone manufacturer dedicated to “chemical-free” sanitation solutions. BioSure Professional, under BES Group, provides professional solutions applying advanced ozone technologies in food safety and hygiene, commercial laundry, air quality control, water treatment, healthcare, and other industries.

Our sanitation solutions have helped numerous global corporations and organizations, spanning hospitality to medical care industries, to reduce millions of chemical detergents use annually. The Central Ozone Water Disinfection System we offer uses BES patented electrolytic ozone technology, generating ozone-dissolved water containing high concentration ozone. It can be integrated with the existing water supply, transforming the general tap water into high-concentration antibacterial disinfection water. It’s just that simple and hassle-free.

Ozone water is one of the most misunderstood chemicals […]

Ozone water is one of the most misunderstood chemicals in how it’s produced, its efficacy as a disinfectant, and it’s potential to replace chemical cleaning agents as a safe and environmentally friendly sanitizing agent. Ozone water as a term is in itself, misleading, with “ozonated water” being the correct term.

Ozone water is one of the world’s most powerful oxidizing agents, as it readily removes organic and microorganisms and pollutants in water supplies. Ozone is a molecular compound of three oxygen atoms (O3), in which two oxygen atoms from the basic oxygen molecule (O2 – the oxygen that humans breathe) and contains a third oxygen atom that can easily detach from the ozone compound and reattach to other molecules. When this third oxygen atom, called a radical, attaches to the molecules of other substances, it can break down their structure and destroy them. The traditional methods of chlorine treatments generate the extremely carcinogenic by-products of trihalomethanes (THMs), and cannot remove many pathogens from the drinking supply, including the notorious cryptosporidium. Ozone water systems kill cryptosporidium and other microbes, while oxidizing many other foreign substances and tannins that lurk in the supply.

How does Ozonation work?

Ozonation is the infusion of ozone with water to both disinfect water and to be used as a disinfection agent for a variety of applications and industries. During ozonation, ozone directly attacks the surface layer of microorganisms and destroys their cell walls, as it is a highly reactive oxidant. When ozone is added to water, it quickly dissolves contaminants without any changes to the composition of water and introduces no odor or taste. This infusion of ozone into water reduces the concentration of iron, manganese, and sulfur improving the aesthetic quality of the drinking supply. The ozonation method is highly effective in killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that contaminate water and can lead to cancers and other related illnesses. An ozonation system usually consists of a two-stage process; ozone generation and ozone reaction.

BES electrolytic ozone generators produce ozonated water through the use of energy using electrolysis technology. Our EOG (Electrolytic Ozone Generator) is safe as a NOx-free technology.

Electrolytic ozone is produced by passing an electrical current through the water breaking the oxygen molecules into atoms, where the free atoms can converge with oxygen molecules to form 03, generating a higher concentration of ozone than UV radiation or corona discharge methods. Ozone concentration is the total ratio of feed gas to ozone production and is factored by measuring grams of ozone per standard cubic meter [g(O3)/Nm³] or by weight percentage (wt%). The traditional ozone applications produce ozone from the air with a range of 2 to 6 wt% and from oxygen with concentration from 7 wt% to over 20 wt%. Electrolytic ozone has a concentration of more than 20wt%, and BES systems can achieve up to 28 percent overall concentration. Furthermore, ozone generated from the air has a much higher percentage of contaminants than ozone generated from water, and the high purity ozone dissolves in water up to 400% more effectively, and efficiently than other ozone generation methods. The resultant ozone from BES is then dissolved into the water for treatment, where it reacts with unwanted contaminants and neutralizes them.

Why Ozonated Water?

Water is one of the most critical and basic of human needs, yet is one of the most challenging to provide. One of the largest problems facing developed and developing nations alike is access to clean and safe drinking water. Clean, drinkable water is one of the world’s most valuable commodities, and every individual around the globe should have access to it. However, even though greater and greater numbers of countries continue to advance, modernize, and become more technologically advanced, there is not a corresponding increase in the number of people who have access to purified, clean water. The cost of this lack of access to disinfected water is measured not in dollars, but in health and lives. With the UN declaring access to clean water a basic human right, water is the one necessity governments absolutely must invest in. High-quality water systems contributing to flourishing, communities, and global progression.

However, providing clean, potable water for the world’s citizens isn’t as straightforward as simply purifying our water sources. When doing so, it is necessary to minimize the amount of Disinfection By-Products (DBPs) used in the process, as well as those present in the final result. Decontaminating water can become a complex process with a myriad of difficulties to overcome, as amongst the impurities found in unsafe water are allergens, bacteria, and viruses – all leading factors in human disease and death. To ensure the ongoing safety and growth of our societies, a revolution in current outdated, water supplies is crucial.

The use of ozone to disinfect water has been proven to be one of the most efficient methods possible, as it introduces the least amount of DBPs into the environment and air. Ozonation can completely oxidize and decontaminate water in a very short time, without producing any of the harmful by-products that are so damaging to both humans and our environment.

Benefits of Ozonated Water

Ozone water is one of the fastest and safest methods for disinfecting water and has numerous benefits for people and the environment. One of the greatest benefits of ozone is how effective it is in disinfecting water; it quickly and thoroughly kills bacteria, viruses, and disease-causing microorganisms. The oxygen in the water also improves brain function and overall physiological health contributing to increased well-being and quality of life among communities. Ozonated water also removes colors, taste, and odor from water, making it safer to drink. Ozonated water can purify water from most pathogens and create safe and clean ozone water for people to drink, cook with, and clean with.

Ozonation does not add chemicals to the water (as with chlorination) and can be used regardless of the unprocessed water’s initial pH level. This removes the need for any pH balancers and the associated time, cost, and equipment other methods introduce into the purification process. Perhaps most impressively, the resultant purified water is pH neutral with no extra steps or processing required.

After the water is disinfected, any remaining ozone simply breaks down naturally and doesn’t pollute the air or water – it quickly returns to the atmosphere as regular O2– oxygen that is safe to breathe. Consequently, ozonated water does not produce any harmful by-products, keeping the environment safe and clean, thus reducing overall pollution. On a macroscale, ozonated water can also be used to disinfect polluted waters caused by large industrial businesses. As ozonated water is created by the self-contained ozone generator, it doesn’t require costly and cumbersome storage or transportation. It can be implemented and built into existing infrastructure, seamlessly and with low-cost effort.

Developments in Ozone Systems

Traditional methods used to make ozone have been known to have limitations, including being generally more expensive than a chlorine-based system and requiring qualified professionals for design, operation, and maintenance.

However, with a new invention, BES electrolysis ozone generators have solved this problem, bringing high-quality water and efficient infrastructure to the market. Through the implementation of state of the art electrolysis technology that saves money due to lower power consumption, and by simplifying the technology so most technicians can quickly install ozone systems that automate the disinfection process, they are now the ideal choice in producing ozone water, with much more elevated capabilities than traditional chlorine applications.

Ozonated Water is Here to Stay

The use of ozone to disinfect and sanitize water is the most beneficial approach when protecting people from unwanted pathogens and microorganisms and promoting overall human health. The low environmental impact of the system helps to create and preserve flourishing biodiversity and interconnected ecosystems on the planet.

Ozone is an ideal solution to providing entire communities with clean and potable water that is essential to having a productive and vital society. On a larger scale, access to clean water, and low pollution urban center are imperative to human health and safety. Clean water is necessary for agriculture, food production, and sanitation of entire civilizations. All of these factors make for a healthier population and support a better quality of life, for humanity and the plant and animal life that co-exists amongst the technological advancements. BES ozone systems are the next evolution in the mass production and consumption of elegant water systems that reflect a new vision for an ever-advancing human population.

For over a hundred years, ozone technology (in ozone water or ozone gas) has been used as a sanitizing solution to sanitize drinking water and water lines. This natural ozone therapy sanitizing solution is now available on a micro-scale for people everywhere. Unfortunately, there is still much misinformation about the safety of ozone water and ozone water treatment.

Have you noticed that fresh and clean odor in the air after a thunderstorm? That’s the smell of ozone, which is NOT some toxic gas, but instead, the purest form of oxygen. When oxygen takes on a third oxygen atom it becomes O3 or ozone. Just like nature makes ozone through electricity in the upper atmosphere, we here on earth can also add an electrical charge to water, resulting in an ozonation process to make ozone water. Electrolytic ozone generators can safely produce ozonated water faster and more efficiently than other technologies.

How Ozonation Works

Water ozonation is a chemical water treatment technique based on the infusion of ozone into water. Ozone is a gas composed of three oxygen atoms (O3), which is one of the most powerful oxidants. Freshwater treated with ozone — that extra oxygen atom — causes a chemical reaction that infuses the water with oxygen molecules. Water ozonation is a chemical process in which ozone concentrations of the chemical ozone (O3) are dissolved into a body of water. O3 will typically break apart within milliseconds and what is left behind is oxygen. Ozonation is a type of advanced oxidation process involving the production of reactive oxygen that’s able to attack a wide range of organic compounds and all microorganisms.

The treatment of water — and a water contact tank — with ozone has a wide range of applications, as it is effective as a disinfection method as well as for the degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants. Ozone is produced with the use of energy by subjecting oxygen (O2) to high electric voltage, with required amounts of ozone produced at the point of use.

With an electrolytic ozonated water generator, a stream of water is electrically charged. This charge in the water allows the ozone to form. Next, the ozonated water is pumped into the target water supply. As the ozone passes through the water, it will begin to break down into oxygen. There are two types of electrolytic generators: proton exchange membrane and direct. They each have specific applications and differ from the corona discharge method of creating ozone.

Substances that the oxide atoms will react with include iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Ozone is also very effective in eliminating biological matter in the water like bacteria or viruses. After the chemical ionization is finished, the water then goes through a post-filtration process to remove any particulate matter that was created in the process. The final water supply is then completely free of impurities. That means it is ready for use in a number of applications that span the medical, dental, and food sanitation industries among others.

Is ozone water safe?

In fact, ozonation has been proven to be safer and more effective than chlorination for water treatment. Drinking ozonated water is perfectly safe. The process has been approved by the US FDA since 2001, and it’s fast becoming the preferred method for purifying, food-processing, and bottling across a range of industries to kill bacteria and viruses, and without leaving chemical residues as chlorine does.

Because of the unstable nature of the O3 molecule, we don’t need to worry about any residual dangers from the ozonation process. There is also no effect of the process on a water’s pH balance. Because oxidation can be completed in such a short amount of time, the process remains fully within the safety limits outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. After the breakdown of the ozone and the diffusion of the oxide atoms, a process that takes only milliseconds, there are no lingering ozone molecules. The only things created by the process are newly recycled oxygen molecules and low levels of particulate matter formed by the oxide atoms.

US Government Approval of Ozone

Ozone water has received a number of certifications from governing bodies. In 2001, the US FDA approved ozonated water as an Antimicrobial Agent for direct contact with food of all types (Federal Register 66(123):33829-33830, June 26, 2001). Ozone therapy is safe for all organic materials. In the early 1980s, the FDA approved ozone as a disinfectant for bottled water used by tens of millions of people around the world and as a sanitizer for bottled water processing lines. In 1999, the US FDA turned over its responsibilities for “sanitizers” to the US EPA, and EPA refers to ozone as a “sanitizer” for direct contact with food and for disinfection of commercial food processing equipment.

The fact that ozone does not leave any chemical residues — in the way chlorination does — makes ozone a preferred method for disinfection by more and more business owners who want to leave a lighter touch on the environment in their daily operations. There are numerous cost benefits over the long term to ozone sanitation systems, leading ozone to become more widely adopted by dentists, hospitality, food and beverage, and commercial cleaning and laundry industries.

Conclusion

Ozone has gone through a long and arduous path to approval. However, now more business owners and individuals are enjoying the benefits of ozonated water in providing safer food products and healthcare services, among other applications, while cutting down on the cost of both chemical costs and hiring crews to apply complex chemical solutions.

The planet is thankful as well, as ozone leaves no chemical byproducts and simply converts back to oxygen. As ozone emerges back into the spotlight as a known virus killer during the global COVID pandemic, this technology will become more commonplace in even more industries as a first and last line of defense in keeping us safe and healthy.

Ozone has proven to be a powerful disinfection technology used for over a hundred years to keep us safe from infections from bacteria and viruses. Those with concerns that ozone or ozone water might be harmful to humans should continue reading to learn about the many benefits of ozone (including ozone treatment, ozone therapy, and more) and its current uses across a number of industries, particularly compared to the use of chemical disinfection agents.

Ozonated water is one of the most effective water treatment sanitation solutions on the market. Recent advancements in electrolytic ozone technology have made ozone even more accessible by allowing the generating of ozonated water at higher concentrations with smaller machines that can fit in compact spaces. Ozone technology is used across a variety of industries, with applications for healthcare, food and beverage safety and sanitation, professional laundry, professional cleaning, and even for dental use.

For example, ozonated water can kill bacteria on surfaces of kitchen counters and food prep stations. Ozone exposure is commonly used to disinfect fish, meat, vegetables, and poultry by removing bacteria and pathogens through a wash with ozonated water. It’s also effective at removing odors from mildew in washing machines and disinfecting dental water units.

Ozone leaves no chemical residue

Thanks to the ozone’s short half-life — an average of 15 minutes — it dissipates into oxygen after an exceptionally short period after disinfection. This means if you were to disinfect a room with ozone mist, its half-life math means after twenty minutes there wouldn’t be any trace of ozone left in the air or on the ground level, unlike chlorine or other chemicals that can leave high levels of residue or even trace amounts of toxic gas.

This is because ozone is unstable and reverts back to oxygen (O2) after a short period. Research by the world-recognized laboratory Campden BRI backs up these claims. Trials undertaken in 2014 found that ozone treatment — at the right concentrations and contact times — can be an effective environmental disinfectant and when used correctly, causes no adverse effects after disinfection.

How ozone disinfects

We might be familiar with ozone in our upper atmosphere or in the air. But ozone can be generated on-demand as well. Ozone is highly reactive and attracts electrons from other compounds. It oxidizes — a process where it undergoes a reaction in which electrons are lost — drastically reducing the biological integrity of anything it attacks. Ozone ruptures the cell wall of bacteria causing the cells to break down and so there’s no chance for the biological organism to build up immunity, unlike chemical disinfectants. Ozone can oxidize certain minerals as well, and is highly effective at water purification, removing manganese and iron out of drinking water.

It disinfects surfaces

Ozonated water has been a blessing for the food and beverage and healthcare industries. In central kitchens and restaurant food prep stations, bacteria collect on surfaces that are used to prepare food. Some hotel chains and large restaurants require multiple food prep stations to handle a large number of customers.

This makes it a challenge for kitchen staff to use chlorine to disinfect these food prep surfaces every night. For one, the storage of enough chlorine to disinfect every food prep station on a daily basis uses valuable facility space. Secondly, mixing the chlorine disinfection solution is prone to human error, especially if employees do not undergo proper training.

Ozone water treatment is a safe, environmentally safe solution. With ozone, kitchen staff can simply spray ozonated water via an ozone spray bottle on surfaces, and rid them of bacteria by simply wiping them down, saving time, money, and hassle.

Is ozone harmful to humans?

Ozonated water made through electrolytic ozone generators is safe for humans. The US and Europe have strict indoor ozone safety standards. If exposure is controlled, there are no safety issues. However, ozonated gas generated through the corona discharge methods does bring safety concerns.

When inhaled, ozone gas can damage the lungs, and relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation. Ozone may also have negative effects on people with or respiratory conditions such as asthma and affect their ability to fight respiratory infections.

Compared to the long-term effects of using chlorine for disinfection, ozone is safer. Chlorine is a chemical disinfection agent that has drawbacks for both humans and the environment. Long-term exposure to low levels of chlorine gas is potentially linked to lung disease, including bronchitis, shortness of breath, possibly permanent damage, as well as tooth corrosion.

Chlorine is also a comparatively weaker disinfection agent, offering relatively low protection against protozoa. On top of this, chlorine has lower disinfection effectiveness in turbid water, leaves a bad taste and odor in the air, and is subject to human error as people mix the chemical solution. This can lead to dangerous outcomes and often leads to using unsafe amounts.

Ozone is your friend

Ozone is not to be feared. There is a myriad of benefits from ozonated water technology. While there are guidelines to follow for the safe and proper use of ozone, the benefits of ozonated water and electrolytic ozone generator technology far outweigh these concerns. Business owners are realizing this and are starting to replace chemical disinfection processes with ozone water at record numbers, due to both the overwhelming effectiveness and its benefits for the environment.

BES Group is one of the leading ozonated water manufactures. With numerous patents for revolutionary electrolytic ozone technology, BES Group ozone generators produce higher concentrations of ozonated water through compact devices that can be installed almost anywhere. With recent reports that ozonated water can kill Covid-19, ozone is now making a comeback in helping keep people, including those with a compromised immune system, safe from infection. Ozonated water is particularly important in businesses that fall into high-risk categories for Covid-19 infection, such as nursing homes, hospitals, and bars. Click here to learn more.
