Background Dr. Burt Kuran is a dental surgeon in Melbou […]

Background

Dr. Burt Kuran is a dental surgeon in Melbourne, Australia. Patients in the Melbourne area count on Dr. Kuran for exceptional treatment when undergoing dental surgical procedures. He is one of the first dentists in Australia to use ozonated water as part of the disinfection process.

Problem

Dr. Kuran’s clinic has multiple surgical rooms, each with a dental unit. The water lines in the dental unit had been subjected to biofilm buildup, as they use post-filtration water without chlorine, thus creating a breeding ground for bacteria. This was causing bacteria to enter the water lines and biofilm buildup was clogging these thin tubes. As a dental surgeon, Dr. Kuran needed to provide safe water for patients to rinse with and for surgeons to wash their hands with. When dental unit water lines were compromised with biofilm and blocked, Dr. Kuran had to pay a technician to come in and flush them clean for each dental unit. He was looking for an automated way to continuously sanitize dental unit waterlines and remove biofilm to provide patients the best possible treatment.

Solution

When Dr. Kuran learned about the Water Disinfection System (WDS) inline ozone disinfection solution by BioSure, he was pleased to know he could disinfect dental unit water lines without calling a technician and without adding any additional processes to keep water lines clean. He installed a WDS unit in each surgical room to automate the disinfection process and avoid biofilm from building up in the units. This creates safe water for patients to rinse with and prevents biofilm buildup in the dental units. Additionally, Dr. Kuran and the dental staff use the WDS for hand washing before, during, and after surgical procedures. Staff at Dr. Kuran’s clinic are now finding peace of mind that disinfection processes are automated, and patients are benefitting from superior treatment.

Background Dr. Chuang is a gum disease specialist in Au […]

Background

Dr. Chuang is a gum disease specialist in Australia. He treats patients with painful gum conditions who experience bleeding gums when they brush. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and if left untreated, a condition called periodontitis can develop that affects the tissues that hold teeth in place.

Problem

Dr. Chuang was looking to offer superior care by minimizing gum bleeding between treatments when patients brush or floss their teeth. He was looking for a way to reduce conditions that the patient came in for before, during, and after gum disease treatment.

Solution

Dr. Chuang tested the Tumbler by BioSure for two months on himself during morning and daytime rinsing. He found that ozonated water from the tumbler minimized gum bleeding after flossing. He prescribed the unit to patients with gum disease to use between treatments. After prescribing rinsing with the tumbler to patients, he was able to examine the health of the gums, discovering that gum bleeding reduced — and that patients wouldn’t have recovered as well without the tumbler. The ozone tumbler effectively reduced the amount of blood after flossing. Previously, he would prescribe drugs like antibiotics to control the bacteria known to infect patients with gum disease. But twice a day rinsing with the tumbler was enough to prevent such complications and was able to prolong the benefits of gum disease treatments after the first week of rinsing.

Now that Dr. Chuang has implemented ozonated water solutions for the benefit of his patients, he is looking to implement BioSure’s Post-filtration Disinfection System (PFDS) for eliminating biofilm buildup that tends to affect dental unit waterlines with ozonated water.

Background Dr. Phil Hand is a dental surgeon who uses a […]

Background

Dr. Phil Hand is a dental surgeon who uses a laser system to perform surgeries. He requires his patients to pre-rinse with ozonated water before surgery to eliminate bacteria in the mouth — ensuring safer oral hygiene and minimizing the risk of airborne bacteria being transferred during the dental operation. Dr. Hand also uses ozonated water as a sanitizer to disinfect surfaces and dental units between surgeries, creating a germ-free environment for both patients and dental staff.

Problem

Performing dental surgery without pre-rinsing can lead to bacterial infections or complications in patients. But traditional chemical rinses may cause infection and/or discoloring of the teeth due to the chemical chlorhexidine. Alcohol-based rinses can also dry out the tissue in the mouth, causing dehydration and even stinging or irritation of the gums in some patients. Dr. Hand wanted to implement a pre-rinsing protocol before surgeries, but pre-rinsing is not common practice as there is currently no chemical solution on the market that is deemed safe and natural enough to accommodate this.

Solution

Dr. Hand installed a Central Disinfection Unit (CDU) by BioSure to the dental units of each surgical room in the clinic so that patients can pre-rinse with ozonated water before surgery. This lets patients reduce the risk from bacteria that can cause oral infections or medical conditions. The pre-rinse can also prevent the onset or development of tooth decay and is known to even promote wound healing after surgery. Furthermore, Dr. Hand also uses ozonated water to sanitize the dental units and surfaces in the dental surgery room, thus preventing the spread of surface bacteria. As a result, patients are receiving a superior level of care and service not found in dental surgery clinics that have yet to implement ozonated water solutions.

Background What: Dental Clinic Disinfection & Sanit […]

Background

What: Dental Clinic Disinfection & Sanitization

Where: Summerville, South Carolina, USA

Who: Dr. Jim Muscott, BSME, DDS

Problem

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Simmons & Muscott Dental Clinic in South Carolina was looking to restore confidence in safety for both patients and staff, critical to continued operations and providing care. Their challenges were to achieve an environment where they can eliminate cross-contamination safely with minimal use and exposure to chemicals. They needed to adequately sanitize surfaces and disinfect their dental clinics.

Solution

The Simmons & Muscott Dental Clinic chose the BioSure solution primarily for the safety and simplicity of using water as the source for oxygen, as well as the stability and safety of applying the aqueous ozone solution when other people are around, including dental staff, patients, and others. Additionally, they chose the BioSure solution because it has the highest concentration of ozone available in this configuration. They chose ozone systems instead of a traditional solution like chlorine because of several factors:

•A desire to limit human exposure to chemicals

•Ozone is a more powerful oxidizer in neutralizing pathogens

•Unlimited availability and convenience of using water and electricity

•Elimination of waste

•Return on investment

•Friendlier to surfaces and materials where other chemicals are degrading them quickly

The cost was secondary because the primary factor was to create the safest environment by eliminating pathogens and minimizing toxic exposure to chemicals.

Given BioSure ozonated systems’ documented payback period of five to six months, it provides a significant cost advantage over consumable disinfectant products. The clinic is saving an average of $USD 500 to $700 per month in chemicals and has achieved in excess of $3,500 in labor efficiencies by shortening the time to turnover operatories and exam rooms.

Environmental impact was also important. Creating a safe, clean environment is their first priority. This not only means eliminating pathogens but also limiting the amount of toxic chemical exposure from packaged disinfectants. In addition, a major benefit was the avoidance of waste-related used chemical products and their packaging that goes to landfills.

They learned about ozone technology through the introduction of BES Technologies by BNA. In addition, there is an extensive amount of useful information in the public domain that is well documented from credible sources. Customer understanding of ozone technology is limited but improving. Developing a clear understanding of the science of ozonated water is the great hurdle to overcome. Once this is achieved, it becomes much easier to create a higher valuation and appreciation of BES Technologies.

Background Dr. Terry Rose is an experienced dental surg […]

Background

Dr. Terry Rose is an experienced dental surgeon in Australia. Dr. Rose was concerned about the quality of the water used within the clinic, especially as it comes into contact with open wounds before, during, and after surgery.

Problem

Dr. Terry Rose knew the difficulty of controlling the water quality during the dental surgery, and the risk associated with using outside water sources on open wounds. He had been using chemical tablets to disinfect dental unit waterlines. However, he was concerned about chemical residue buildup in these narrow dental unit waterlines, which occurs as a result of chlorine not being properly flushed out of water lines. Dr. Rose was looking for a safe and effective solution that could be used as a non-chemical disinfectant to sanitize dental surgery rooms, including surfaces and dental unit waterlines. He found that the main problems with

Solution

After learning about the BioSure system from a reputable dental surgeon in Australia, Dr. Rose implemented the BioSure Compact Disinfection Unit (CDU). He uses the BioSure solution to ensure that the dental water line is free of biofilm and clear of chemical residue buildup. He also uses ozonated water from the system as part of his hygiene protocol to sanitize the room between surgical procedures, including wiping down surfaces and dental chairs. This helps to maintain a disinfected system without relying on the use of chemicals. Dr. Rose is pleased to have the option of controlling the water and solution used during dental surgery. The BioSure system is automated and requires no extra work to disinfect the dental units, as ozonated water is pumped directly into the waterlines. With a reduced risk of infection, Dr. Rose’s patients now receive superior care and peace of mind at the dental clinic.

Covid-19 has uprooted our entire way of life. The virus […]

Covid-19 has uprooted our entire way of life. The virus can attack us through the air, on surfaces, and from human contact. But sooner or later, technological breakthroughs, on top of an accessible vaccine will help us go back to our previous way of life.

Ozonated water is one such technology that’s helping us fight against the virus until a vaccine is safe and easily accessible. There have been studies that provide proof for effective prevention approaches to fighting Covid-19. One of the major strategies to prevent coronavirus from spreading is to regularly disinfect our homes, workplaces, and public places. Ozonated water is a disinfection method that is far superior to chemical agents and equally effective against the Covid-19 virus.

Common Methods for Indoor Disinfection

Studies show that the new coronavirus infects people through respiratory droplets. An infected person’s cough can send infectious respiratory droplets flying as far as six feet. Therefore, it is vital to have a reliable and efficient air disinfection method to disinfect these high-risk areas.

The most common air disinfection method uses ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Yet, UV light has limited penetration capacity as UV radiation can only disinfect air close to the lamps. Another well-known air cleaning method is to employ a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. It is effective in reducing airborne bacteria in the air, though not effective in removing viruses, as it can only trap bacteria with a size bigger than 0.3 microns, thus, these disinfection methods are not ideal for the disinfection of Covid-19 contaminated areas.

Chemical disinfectants have been known to be used for disinfection. Nevertheless, these chemicals are usually difficult to decompose, leaving harmful residues that are dangerous to human health.

On the other hand, ozone disinfection has been commonly used in hospitals to disinfect equipment and significantly reduce or eliminate the spread of bacteria. Ozone is a well-known powerful disinfectant for its ability to kill microorganisms effectively. It has penetration capacity and powerful oxidizing powers that make its disinfection efficiency superior to UV radiation and HEPA filters. And as ozone reverts back to oxygen, it leaves no chemical residues after the reaction. But can ozone disinfection also kill the coronavirus that causes Covid-19?

Can Ozone Disinfection Kill Covid-19?

There are reliable reports showing that ozone sanitation can kill Covid-19. But even before the pandemic of 2020, ozone sanitation was employed to sanitize environments infected with SARS-CoV-1 during the SARS epidemic of 2003. Since SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes the Covid-19 is also a member of the Coronavirus family-like SARS-CoV-1, it is not surprising that ozone sanitization is effective at eliminating Covid-19 and has the potential to bring widespread relief to those who deploy it at home and in workspaces.

In fact, a recent study published last month from Fujita Health University, Japan, announced that they found low concentrations of ozone of 0.05-0.1 ppm, which is harmless to humans, can neutralize Covid-19 cells, potentially providing an effective way for hospitals to disinfect examination rooms and waiting areas during the pandemic. Researchers used an ozone generator in a closed room with Covid-19 samples. After 10 hours of releasing ozonated mist into the room, the virus’s potential for infection dropped by more than 90 percent.

How Does Ozone Sanitization Kill Covid-19?

Ozone (O3) is a reactive element consisting of three atoms of oxygen. It is reactive because it will readily degrade back to its stable state, diatomic oxygen (O2) with the formation of free oxygen atoms or free radicals. The free oxygen atoms or radicals are highly reactive and will oxidize almost anything (including viruses, bacteria, organic and inorganic compounds) in contact, making ozone an enormously powerful disinfectant and oxidizer.

Ozone can be produced by an electrolytic ozone generator. Once ozone is produced, it reacts with a pollutant and breaks it down into less complex molecules via a process called oxidation. The new coronavirus is considered an “enveloped virus”, which is usually more responsive to physicochemical challenges. Ozone destroys this type of virus by diffusing over the outer shell into the core, thereby destroying the viral RNA. Ozone by higher concentration can also destroy the outer shell by oxidation.

How Can We Produce Ozone?

Ozone cannot be stored because of the short half-life and must be produced on-site and on-demand. Therefore, an ozone generator is the most critical component of a successful ozone system.

The electrolytic method is the safest way to produce ozone with higher purity. In this process, water is introduced to the anode side of the electrolysis cell, electrolytically decomposed, and converted to ozone. Through this method, in addition to gaining ozone in higher concentrations, the amount of gas aeration is also small, achieving the advantages of safety and low cost of post-processing.

The Biolux Space Sanitizer System Plus (SSS+) uses advanced electrolysis technology to convert water into high concentration ozone mist. Ozone is safely mixed and misted into the environment for air and surface sanitation.

The SSS+ can provide a safe low-concentration ozone of 0.05 to 0.1 ppm, which complies with the OSHA occupational safety regulations of the United States and can be used as a humidifier. This system is ideal for families with babies, toddlers, and the elderly especially in the current pandemic as they’re the most vulnerable group when facing the Covid-19 virus.

Hand hygiene has never been taken so seriously by the p […]

Hand hygiene has never been taken so seriously by the public as it is in 2020 and 2021. Ever since COVID-19 emerged as a worldwide health emergency in February 2020, health agencies and healthcare workers have advised on how to protect ourselves from the new virus. Mask wearing, social distancing, and self-isolation are considered the most effective ways to prevent the spreading of COVID-19.

Among all of them, one suggestion stands out above all, which has been repeated on news announcements, advertisements, and authoritative interviews — washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. The World Health Organization (WHO) published an infographic showing the correct way to wash hands, which even advises washing for 40 to 60 seconds. It is suggested by the WHO that adopting frequent hand hygiene as part of day-to-day practice can play a critical role in fighting COVID-19, as hand washing is one of the most effective actions people can take to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections including the COVID-19 virus.

Why Hand Hygiene Matters

The reason that hand hygiene has been taken so seriously is that the COVID-19 virus mainly spreads through droplet and contact transmission. Most often, this happens through aerosol transmission or by hands after touching infected people or contaminated objects or surfaces. Our hands can spread the virus to other surfaces or our mouth, nose, or eyes if we touch them. One of the cheapest, easiest, and most important ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to wash our hands frequently with soap and water. Numerous studies have proven that hand washing can mechanically remove pathogens, and laboratory data demonstrate that alcohol-based hand rub effectively reduces the number of pathogens that may be present on the hands.

When You Should Wash Your Hands

Early on in the pandemic, the UK government’s scientific advice was that we should wash our hands every few hours, even when most of the populace was quarantined in their homes. Thomas Gilbert, an associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Northeastern University in Boston, said in an interview that’s not really necessary for those who mostly stay home.

Healthcare providers and those caring for Covid-19 patients need to wash their hands more frequently, especially if they are coming into contact with objects or surfaces the infected patient has touched or coughed on. The CDC has also listed a few key times when people should wash their hands for avoiding germs spreading including:

Before, during, and after preparing food

Before eating food

Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea

Before and after treating a cut or wound

After using the toilet

After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet

After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste

After handling pet food or pet treats

After touching garbage

Since hands are a major source of germ transmission, it is vital for healthcare organizations and those linked to public health to train their staff on proper hand hygiene, including healthcare institutions, food and beverage services. According to the CDC, healthcare providers need to wash their hands as many as 100 times per twelve-hour shift, depending on the number of patients and intensity of care. The FDA also highlighted the importance of hand hygiene including washing hands for at least 20 seconds for employees in food service establishments or retail food stores during the pandemic.

Alternatives for Hand Disinfection

In addition to handwashing with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, there is some exciting news on alternatives for maintaining hand hygiene. Researchers have found that ozone water or ozonated water is a great weapon to fight against COVID-19 as well. According to the CDC, ozone is a safe and effective sanitation method, protecting against even some of the most resistant microorganisms. Compared to general chlorine disinfectants, its sterilization speed is said to be 3,000 times faster, and its sterilization ability is 50 times stronger. In addition to its strong ability in disinfection, it leaves no chemical residues on hands or in the air, and it has no taste or smell after the reaction. It also causes no negative effect or irritation to our mouth, nose, or skin.

In October 2020, Scientists at Fujita Health University, Japan, found that low concentrations of ozone can kill coronavirus cells, which may provide a way for hospitals to disinfect examination rooms and waiting areas. The study used an ozone generator in a closed room with Covid-19 samples. After 10 hours of subjecting the virus specimen to low-concentration ozone, the potency of the virus dropped by more than 90 percent.

Even before the 2020 pandemic, scientists found ozonated water disinfects hands better than alcohol-based sanitizer — excellent news for surgeons who suffer from eczema caused by frequent hand washing. Hans Johan Breidablik, the lead researcher of this study, said one of the benefits of disinfecting hands with ozonated water is that it does not cause skin irritation and dryness that can be associated with 75% alcohol hand sanitizer. It also doesn’t damage latex or rubber gloves and other medical protective gear.

According to a study from the University’s Institute of Population Health, among all cases of irritant contact dermatitis, they found a quarter of them were in healthcare workers.

An unlimited source of chemical-free disinfection
with an ozone water disinfection system

Ozonated water is easy to obtain now with the availability of commercial electrolytic ozone generators. The Water Disinfection System (WDS) by BioSure Professional generates ozonated water on demand by attaching the unit to a waterline. Simply connect the unit to an existing, filtered water input and the system will turn the water into an efficient and safe sanitizer. The process and result are totally chemical-free.

Concentration matters

The WDS uses a revolutionary EOG (Electrolytic Ozone Generator) technology that replaces chemical dosing treatment for sanitation. This safe process reduces overall operating costs and is environmentally friendly. The WDS also produces an instant concentration of ozone that’s superior to ordinary ozone generators. When it comes to hand sanitizing and hand washing, it’s equally effective. Simply attach it to a waterline and ozonated water can be generated in an instant, removing one less path that COVID-19 has to spread the virus.

Healthcare workers, office workers, and homeowners can attach a WDS system to have access to ozonated water to keep viruses and infections away without chemicals or alcohol.

Conclusion

As handwashing becomes part of the post-covid new norm, healthcare professionals are preferring to sanitize their hands with ozonated water. Rather than stocking up on 75% alcohol that leaves a chemical residue, irritates the skin, leaves harsh order and taste, and is not easy to store, ozonated water has come as a new, and improved method for keeping healthcare staff and patients safer from infection.
Amongst a pandemic, healthcare professionals and patien […]

Amongst a pandemic, healthcare professionals and patients working in clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes are at a particularly high risk of infection due to unavoidable contact with the Covid-19 virus. These professionals have a responsibility to keep these spaces safe and disinfected to ensure healthcare staff and patient safety. With ozone mist and ozonated water technology, healthcare workers have a new weapon in the fight against the virus that has infected millions worldwide.

The Battlefield: Hospital and Clinics

In response to the pandemic, hospitals and clinics have implemented stricter rules on wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff and visitors. Even so, there are still pathogens floating in the air from mask spillage, incorrect use of PPE, and outside sources. And sometimes, it is just unfeasible to wear a mask or other protective gear. As COVID-19 is growing more contagious patients and hospital staff is among the most susceptible to infection. Earlier this year, in London, two hospital wards had to be shut down due to COVID-19 infections among patients and staff. According to White House leading immunologist Dr. Fauci, the new evidence shows significantly more aerosol transmission of the virus than experts originally thought. This implies that we need extra measures to ensure safe air and space for hospitals and clinics.

The Dilemma for Care Home Visitors

Being able to rely on PPE is not enough for residents of senior care homes. Staff can wear PPE, but it is impractical to ask residents to wear them all the time. As these residents are of the most at-risk age group, many care senior care homes limit or even ban visitors to protect their residents. However, these measures have damaging effects on the resident’s mental and physical health. Residents who feel helpless in the absence of loved ones are at a higher risk of premature death. These restrictions are also taking away the final moments families get with their loved ones. In Melbourne, Australia, a dying mother had to spend her final week of life separated from their family.

The fight with Covid-19 is going to be a long and difficult one. More families are going to be affected by and demand visiting rights. Healthcare professionals need to establish a safe environment for family visits in care homes in this difficult time.

Better Sanitation for Healthcare

To ensure patients and healthcare professionals have a healthy and safe environment, hospitals and clinics need to meet a higher environmental standard. The air that we breathe carries bacteria and viruses. COVID-19 is just one of many pathogens and toxins which can cause disease and death via our respiratory pathways. And using the wrong chemical disinfectants can lead to respiratory problems and headaches.

A solution to this is to use misting ozone. Ozone is a strong natural oxidizer that can oxidize almost anything. Once reacted with pathogens, ozone turns into oxygen and leaves no chemical residuals. With a concentration of 0.05 to 0.1 ppm, ozone is safe for people to be around. Ozonated water in mist form, or misting ozone can reach all corners of a space, effectively disinfecting the air in a room.

Breaking News: Ozone can kill COVID-19

The ozone space sanitizer system is effective at neutralizing the deadly COVID-19 virus. The Biosure Professional Space Sanitizer System Plus (SSS Plus) is the most powerful ozone sanitizer on the market, releasing ozonated water in a mist with a higher concentration of ozone at 0.05 to 0.1 ppm — harmless to humans but deadly against Covid-19. According to studies from Fujita Health University, ozone is particularly effective at killing COVID-19 in humid conditions. The BioSure Professional system also comes with a humidification function that maximizes the potency of ozone.

Ozone kills other bacteria and viruses

Despite the threat of Covid-19, other microorganisms in the air can also be harmful to us. The BioSure Professional SSS Plus Plus produces potent ozone that can oxidize and kill 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, such as H1N1 and E Coli, in the space of 52 square meters and at a rate of 3000 times faster than Chlorine.

It can refresh the air

The SSS Plus removes odor thanks to the oxidizing properties of misting ozone. The BioLux SSS Plus can oxidize and remove both pathogens and odor molecules in the air and turn them into oxygen, providing fresh air in confined spaces.

It can do more than sanitize

Dry nasal passages make us more susceptible to viruses. The SSS Plus is also a humidifier, a device that has been shown to alleviate asthma and allergy symptoms, as well as keep nasal cavities moisturized –- lowering the overall chance of infection.

It’s environmentally friendly

Air sanitizer systems should not pollute our environment. There are many methods for ozone production but the electrolytic method stands out for being the most efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective over the long term. Using an advanced electrolytic process, such as BioLux’s patented electrolytic ozone technology allows for ozonated water generation without nitrogen oxides. Ozone produced by patented electrolytic ozone technology is byproduct-free and reacts with pathogens, including Covid-19, eliminating it in every corner of the space, leaving the room virus and bacteria free before turning back into oxygen.

It’s safe for humans

Some air purifiers and disinfection technologies effectively kill bacteria and viruses, but they can also be harmful to humans. UV irradiation systems have been reported to cause skin cancer, and poorly designed ozone systems may release nitrogen oxides of ozone of a concentration that is harmful to humans.

Safety is at the heart of the SSS Plus design. This system produces ozone at a tightly controlled concentration that is safe for humans. Their patented electrolytic ozone technology ensures this low concentration ozone is also nitrogen oxides-free. On top of that, the system automatically shuts itself when there are people within 80cm of the machine.

Ozone is Our Front Line COVID-19 Defense

With proper measures taken, we can keep a virus-free household or workplace and have peace of mind during a pandemic. Thanks to misting ozone through electrolytic ozone generation, Covid-19 transmission can be a worry of the past so long as we’re using ozonated water against the virus. Hand washing and social distancing are still essential for staying healthy. But thanks to technological achievements and devices like the SSS Plus, we can slowly move towards a semblance of normal life before the pandemic and keep our spaces virus-free.
Technology is quickly transforming our healthcare lands […]

Technology is quickly transforming our healthcare landscape. The 21st century has gifted the medical industry some amazing inventions, and dentists are especially proactive about adopting new technology in their practices. One of the most significant findings in the dental industry is the use of ozone in dentistry.

A big problem for dentists is keeping water that flows from dental unit waterlines safe from biofilm that contaminates water flowing through these units. Dental unit waterlines are plastic tubing that carries water to a dentist’s high-speed handpiece, air/water syringe, and ultrasonic scaler. Patients ingest water from these tubes and dental staff is exposed to aerosols on a daily basis.

What is biofilm?

Biofilm is a thin, slimy film of bacteria that sticks to moist surfaces, such as those inside dental unit waterlines. Biofilm develops in dental unit waterlines because of the long, narrow tubing and periods of slow or stopped-flow rates used in dental clinics, and the potential for retraction of oral fluids by patients. As a result, common water bacteria can be found in alarmingly high numbers of untreated dental unit water systems.

Biofilm is not eliminated by flushing the water lines with tap water, a daily procedure recommended by the CDC to ensure clean water in dental offices. Some of these microorganisms found in untreated dental unit water cause diseases, including Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and nontuberculous Mycobacterium.

Not only patients but dental health care personnel are also placed at risk of adverse health effects if water is not appropriately treated. Previously, dentists used a combination of chemicals and multi-step procedures to disinfect water lines. But in recent years, the industry has adopted ozone as a safer and more efficient disinfection method, not to mention more cost-effective.

How ozone kills bacteria in dental waterlines

Ozone (O3) is an active gas consisting of three atoms of oxygen. It is active because the gas will readily degrade back to its stable state, diatomic oxygen (O2) with the formation of free oxygen atoms or free radicals. The free oxygen atoms or radicals are highly reactive and they will oxidize almost anything it contacts (including viruses, bacteria, organic and inorganic compounds), making ozone an enormously powerful disinfectant and oxidizer.

Ozone is a very good alternative and additional support to standard disinfectants due to its acknowledged disinfection power. Ozone water can directly oxidize and decompose essential biomolecular components in bacteria. All vital functions of bacteria (incapable of developing any self-immunity) are stopped as a result of applying ozone for just a few seconds and can disinfect dental unit water lines in seconds.

Ozone kills bacteria in minutes

In a 2015 Egypt study by Iran J Parasitol, two dental unit waterlines were tested for the presence of Acanthamoeba microbes — harmful bacteria that are prone to develop in these narrow plastic tubes. When testing untreated water lines, the research team discovered bacteria in 100 percent of dental unit waterlines, compared to just 72 percent of tap water samples. That means tap water is cleaner than untreated dental unit waterlines.

In the study, aqueous ozone was injected into the dental unit water bottles for five minutes in the first unit and for ten minutes in a second unit. The lines were then flushed with ozonated water for five minutes, after which water was immediately sampled via the high-speed handpiece into sterile containers. This was repeated daily every morning for seven days. Water samples were collected before and after treatment. All the samples were cultured on nutrient agar plates and incubated at 37 °C for 7 days to determine the presence of Acanthamoeba bacteria before and after exposure to ozone.

Researchers discovered that when Acanthamoeba bacteria were exposed to several concentrations of ozonated water, the cell viability of the bacteria decreased to 52 percent after exposure to ozonated water for just four minutes, while Acanthamoeba was killed (100 percent) after just five minutes of exposure. This is why dentists have adopted aqueous ozone systems in their practices.

Ozonated water – A dentist’s secret weapon

The results show just how effective ozonated water is for keeping these bacteria from infecting patients undergoing dental procedures, making it an invaluable tool for dentists in keeping patients and dental staff safe. At the same time, patients undergoing stressful dental procedures will have peace of mind knowing they won’t be exposed to contaminated water.

The total number of Covid-19 cases is approaching 83 mi […]

The total number of Covid-19 cases is approaching 83 million worldwide. Until a vaccine is available, we will have to continue to vigorously wash our hands, keep social distancing, and wear masks. While we can do that when we are out and about, there are some settings where social distancing is unfeasible. And like it or not, sometimes we have to share the same surfaces and breathe the same air.

Offices, hotels, and vets require more than just regular hand washing to keep themselves and customers safe. They need a continuous disinfection system that can eliminate COVID-19. One that performs it’s job non-stop but is also harmless to us. Ozone mist does just that.

Ozone Mist: A Covid-19 Terminator

Ozone is proven to be an effective Covid-19 disinfectant in low concentrations. According to researchers at Fujita Health University, ozone in concentrations of 0.05 to 0.1 ppm can neutralize COVID-19 particles while remaining harmless to humans. Based on these results, researchers suggested that low concentration ozone can be applied to hospital settings, such as waiting and examination rooms.

Apart from its powerful disinfectant qualities, ozone is also a strong odor remover. Ozone reacts with odor molecules and, through oxidation, eliminates these odor molecules. As soon as this oxidation happens, the ozone transforms into pure water, leaving the air odor-free and chemical-free.

Benefits of Constant Ozone Disinfection

Continuous ozone mist disinfection can ensure that viral levels in the room are consistently minimized. The determining factor of whether a person falls sick from Covid-19 is the viral loads present in that person. That is the actual amount of Covid-19 virus in a person’s body. By minimizing environmental virus count, we can minimize the chance of contracting Covid-19. With ozone’s odor-removing qualities, misting continuously also ensures fresh air for optimal staff productivity and a better customer experience.

An Ideal System for a Safe and Fresh Environment

The BioSure Space Sanitizer System Plus (SSS+) is a disinfection machine and humidifier that uses patented electrolytic oxidation technology to produce a safe, moisturized ozone mist that keeps rooms well disinfected and odorless.

What Is Electrolytic Ozone?

Electrolytic ozone is a cutting-edge, patented technology that produces ozone from normal water without creating any by-products. This ozone is a strong disinfectant that kills 99.99% of harmful microorganisms, including COVID-19. During this process, toxic inorganic compounds are also eliminated by oxidation. Ozone from this process releases turns back into oxygen, resulting in sanitized water with inactive oxidized pathogens.

Chemical-Free and Safe

The Biosure SSS Plus provides low-concentration ozone that is harmless to humans. It is safe for toddlers as well as the elderly. It works by distributing this low-concentration ozone into the air in mist form, reaching all corners of a room and providing blanket disinfection for space. As an extra precaution, the system will also automatically shut down when people get too close.

In addition to these built-in safety designs, the Biosure SSS Plus runs solely on water and electricity. The ozone produced using this method releases no nitrogen oxides or any other chemical by-products. All of these advantages make the Biosure SSS Plus the safest, simplest, and most environmentally friendly way of sanitizing a room or space.

Better Air Quality, and a Better Experience

The Biosure SSS Plus ozone misting system is an all-round air quality improver. Other than disinfecting the room and keeping you safe during the global pandemic, it removes foul-smells and comes with a humidification function. Dry air is a known trigger for asthma and can cause skin dry skin and other skin problems. The BioLux system has a single button design that can solve these problems with a switch.

Ozone Mist is Effective and Efficient

The Biosure SSS Plus can effectively sanitize up to 150 square meters, the size of the average lobby or waiting area. The ozone produced by this system can remove bacteria and viruses at a rate 3000 times faster than chlorine. According to studies, ozone is effective at killing COVID-19 in especially humid environments, another reason the Biosure SSS Plus features a humidification function. While ozone freshens the air up, the machine humidifies the room, helping beef up the ozone mist’s potency.

A Safe and Comfortable Space for Your Staff and Customers

A cleaner space means better health for employees and customers. Business owners have a responsibility to do their best to keep employees and customers safe during the pandemic. Keeping the workplace disinfected and staff healthy ensures business can run as usual.

Ozone for Offices

Offices are one of the most high-risk environments to catch COVID-19. An average office worker spends eight hours in the office in close contact with dozens of people. Office sick leave chains can easily start without a reliable and thorough sanitizing system to constantly disinfect the office. Implementing ozone mist in office meeting rooms and elevators can help ensure the health and productivity of employees.

Ozone for Veterinary Clinics

Veterinary centers can significantly benefit from an odor-removing and humidifying disinfection system in their practices. The Biosure SSS Plus can pump out low concentration ozone mist continuously. The ozone dose is safe for vets, animals, and pet parents. Employing the system in veterinary centers can eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses, and odors that pets can be prone to spreading.

In the midst of a pandemic, extra precaution is needed when it comes to workplace cleanliness and sanitation. If one person falls sick, the whole business can be at risk. An effective ozone mist system could prevent this tragedy. The BioSure Space Sanitizer System is the best ozone mist distributor for the safest, easiest, and most efficient way to disinfect and freshen your environment.
